Christmas has passed, the decorations are once again stored away, and inspiration is restored as everyone makes an effort to start fresh for the new year. Before winter is over, here are a few things you might want to experience a few more times before planning your summer vacation.
- Play in the snow as it comes down. Lift your face up to the sky, close your eyes, feel the chill on your cheeks. Appreciate the warm bundle of coat, thick head band/hat, scarf, mittens, socks, and boots. Make snow angels and slide down a snowy hill. Pull your children on a sled. SHARE: Something that will keep another person warm and cozy when the temperature drops.
- Enjoy a special hot beverage that warms your hands and stomach. What is your favorite winter drink? Hot coffee, Hot chocolate, or Hot tea? Make a cup for yourself at home or treat yourself at your local coffee-house. SHARE: Offer to purchase a hot beverage for the next person in line or take an extra cup to work and give it to the first person who greets you. Not sure what to get? Even a $5.00 gift card can go toward a small cup of coffee.
- Plan a special movie night with your family. Prepare individual servings of popcorn with a selection of 4 or 5 “toppings” to add. Shakers of popcorn seasonings, M&Ms, Reeses Pieces, or Jalapeños Allow each person to create their own snack mix. Grab a few blankets, turn off the lights, and snuggle on the sofa in warm jammies and fuzzy socks. SHARE: Personal stories with your children. What were your winter traditions when you were growing up? Favorite movies and movie snacks?
I’d love to hear your recommendations for more ways to enjoy winter while it lasts. Before you know it, stores will display spring fashions and swims suits. It happens that fast. I’m working toward enjoying what is happening in the moment, even when stress threatens to rob me of the opportunity to be fully present. How about you? I invite you to share comments and collaborate with other parents here.
Happy New Year 2017!
